It Ain’t Just the Clothes

File under: Behind the Aesthetic

I spent the evening at Neumo’s (a club in Seattle) dancing to local hip hop group the Blue Scholars. What did I wear, you ask? Well, my organic cotton sweatshirt by Eco-ganik, of course. (It was surprisingly easy to dance in, and I felt totally comfortable moving in it. Plus, because it’s so well-made, I wasn’t worried about pulling too hard on the seams while dancing around like an idiot.)
While checking out the merch counter, one of the people in my entourage – who shall remain nameless for legal reasons – said he could ZIP me the Blue Scholars’ music so I wouldn’t have to buy it. That brings me back to the eco-conscious thing, though: there are a few ways for me to get my music, and when it come to a local group, buying at the show makes the most sense. Here’s why:

  • If I buy the CD on Amazon I will pay at least $15 (for a new release) and have to wait for it to ship.
  • If I pirate the CD I save that $15, but the already-struggling local artists doesn’t get jack.
  • But! If I wait ever so patiently and buy my music (and shirts, stickers, etc.) at the show, the artists gets a larger percentage of the money I spend…and the CDs are often way cheaper. (Today: $10 for one or $30 for all four.)
  • If you’ve got the cash, it’s obviously the best way to go. Right?

A question: who is your favorite local band/group/artist? It doesn’t matter where you’re from or what style of music it is. My interests are pretty eclectic…so link me!

My favorite band hands down is Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers. They opened up for Matt Wertz a couple years ago and they instantly hooked me. I managed to see them 5 times in one year I believe and their shows never disappoint. I bought one album at Best Buy but have bought every single one of their others at their shows, as well as shirts and stickers, etc. They are not a “local” band for me since I live in Ann Arbor, but they visit here and Chicago enough that I get my fix. I am currently trying to get tix to their show April 3 where they will be opening for OAR…just no luck winning them off the radio yet!
