A Touch of Green: Three Simple Outfits
First, a little pre-scripting: I have short breaks, and those are admittedly bad shots. But c’mon, a girl’s got to look cute even if there’s a toilet behind her, right?
I know that shopping consciously can seem a little daunting: weekly green festivals, local boutiques with crazily-high prices, big-box stores with questionable practices. And with all of the pressure to go green! shop smart! buy local! it can be pretty intimidating to work toward a greener, more conscious shopping experience. The inspiration for this blog has always been to take baby steps – to go green slowly. A good example of that is finding a few key pieces of clothing and working them into your wardrobe. Last week, my conscious shopping inspirations were local clothing designers Lekkerlife and SPUN, as well as jewelry designer Loot!.
If you want to keep a low profile, do not buy Lekkerlife clothing. Every time I wear this jacket I get noticed. Who wouldn’t in something high-waisted and bright pink with a peplum in the back?
I’ve met Gwen Stubs, Lekkerlife’s owner and designer, and she’s just as interesting and full of spunk as her clothing. Each of her pieces is unique or few of a kind, so you’ll never show up looking like someone else. You can find her stuff in Seattle boutiques 20/20, Bouncing Wall, and Frock Shop, or online at Cartfly.com. I got mine at the Deco Modiste showroom sale for half price, though, so if you’re in the area on the first weekend of the month, you should check that out, too.
Now, this next shirt is my brand new favorite. It’s a SPUN boatneck (with pockets!!) and that’s right, I’m mentioning the brand again because I like it that much. I was really nervous about wearing something olive green – would it wash me out? make me look sick? – but owner and designer Sara Seumae assured me that this olive looked good on everyone…and she was right.
This first time I wore it, I avoided pairing this shirt with anything too camo-inspired or earthy. At the same time, I wanted to showcase the cut (I wish I’d gotten a good photo from the front, but since I didn’t, check it out on Miss Elle, who I’m unintentionally copycatting by wearing it) so shiny, modern jewelry was out, too. I turned to my trusty pair of Enzo Angiolini ‘Katlyn’ Pumps for some understated snazziness and left it at that.
The shirt totally went from day to night, too…that is, considering “night” consisted of shopping at my local farmers market. All SPUN clothing is made out of 100% certified organic cotton, so it breathed well, moved with me, and didn’t have me worried as I toted entirely too much produce on a crowded bus. And when I got home I still felt classy, thank you very much.
The third outfit of the week – I call this one casual artsy – also included a SPUN shirt, this time the cowlneck you’ve seen me wear once before. It’s another shirt that I can feel comfortable and classy in, which seems to be rare in the green world, and I can definitely transition it from work to happy hour to home without much fuss.
Last week (and more often than I’d care to admit) I wore the cowlneck with a bracelet and earrings from Loot!, a designer that works with recycled art class to make sturdy, beautiful jewelry and trees. They were featured at the Seattle Green Festival and have lots of shopping options online. Also, if you have any questions, the designer, Genevieve Church, is incredibly nice, and you can contact her through Loot!’s website.
And even though I’ve mentioned it before, you can get SPUN at TheGreenLoop.com (sale!) and Moxie (also sale! code is SPUN20). But you’ve already been there and done that, right? Right.
What I’m trying to get at is this: you don’t need to throw away all of your ungreen duds just to be a conscious shopper. Take your time, find brands that you can stick with (and ones that are in your price range) and don’t stress about it. And if you start feeling a little overwhelmed, just remember: those jeans are from Nordstrom and the Gap, the shoes are all mid-level brands, and the bras? Don’t get me started. (You try to find a conscious company that is affordable and makes a decent 32DD!)
