Things My Boyfriend Thinks Are Creepy

Written on June 30, 2009. Written by Jennifer Nicole.

Every girl has a darker side.  Even the ones that are enamored with pink, obsessed with butterflies and adore pop music get the urge to slip into a little black dress and play the dangerous lady every once in a while…even if it’s just for one night, alone in the house with the lights dimmed.  It brings out another side of us: the irresistable vampire; the charming, devious imp; that mysterious gothic girl you saw at the club one time…

Ghislaine Twins (10×8) by Art & Ghosts: $20

For me, that darkness manifests itself as dreamlike - it tells a story - which inevitably means that I am drawn to it in art.   I see something dark, feminine and a little dangerous in this kind of style; my boyfriend calls it “creepy.”  Luckily, he’s willing to ignore the shivers that some of my favorite pieces give him, because he promised me I could decorate “any way I want” and one of the rooms in my house is going to have this darkly feminine style!  (A side note: it won’t be the bedroom: he won that argument on account of his need for sleep.)

Specimen 652 (prices vary by size) by D.S. Brennan Photography

As a culture, Americans have been desensitized to a cacauphony of things - blood and gore, raunch and greed, violence and outright war – but for some reason, the sight of a taxedermied bird (the one above is from the photographer’s trip to Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center in Mystic, CT) or a staring, silent child can unsettle us.  We can handle the scary stuff if it’s put out there blatently, but a hint of danger or an undercurrent of violence pulls at our center, and tries to convince us to flee.

No Vacancies by Art & Ghosts: $20

I think that’s why I like it so much: these things are unsettling, and in my opinion, art should be unsettling.  Sure, I could buy “background pieces,” but if I didn’t want people to notice my art, to really think about what it means or why it was chosen, I’d just put up wallpaper.

Traveling (15×22) by A Rabbit Girl: $50

The Wing Collector (5×5) by This Year’s Girl: $5

Oh, how I adore dark fairytale art. I have several from A Rabbit Girl and Art & Ghosts is definitely on the list too. There are so many others I love and collect too, but my husband likes creepy so I’m all set.

AJ: I had the same reaction! It makes me want to see the rest of the room, and who her captor is.

It all gives off such a melancholy feel, Jennifer, and while I love it, I can absolutely understand why your boyfriend called time out on you decorating the bedroom as such.

After all, if I were doing what I sometimes do in my bedroom and looked up to see the “No Vacancies” piece, I’d probably start crying.
