Alternatives to Urban Outfitters

Oof, this post got kind of trashed, didn’t it? For current alternatives to Urban Outfitters, including brands in the US, UK and worldwide shipping, click here to see the latest Ethical Alternatives to Urban Outfitters.

Miss Elle’s recent exposé of Urban Outfitters seems to have generated some serious discussion!  Along with comments about gay rights, designer thievery and the definition of the word “Santorum,” commenters, Twitterers and fellow bloggers have been asking one question:

Where the hell do I shop now?

As cheap as Urban Outfitters is, there are more ethical places to shop for funky, trendy styles without spending too much.  In some cases, you’ll get better quality, too.

Shop Ruche

Shop Ruche is a relatively new online shopping site that has all of the trendy designs, but instead of in-house designers copying the trends, they carry various small boutiques.  The site slants toward vintage-inspired designs, and even has an organic section for all of your eco-friendly picks.  (*Update!*: Use coupon “demoiselles” for 10% off your entire ShopRuche.com order, including the items below!)

Champagne & Sparkles Tunic Dress: $42.99

Rocket Dog “Mellowmutt Earth” eco friendly flats: $49.00

Mapel

Mapel is based out of Leavenworth, Washington, carries tons of high quality, road-tested designers and is owned by two amazing women with more style in their pinkies than Richard Hayne has in his entire body.  They also offer free shipping and a “purchase satisfaction guarantee”: exchanges, store credit AND return shipping? Done, done and done!  Don’t forget to sign up for their newsletter, which includes their daily and weekly happy hour specials (great online and in-store deals for those local to Washington AND out of state).

3/4 Sleeve Tuxedo Ruffle Tee: $30.00

Molly Corduroy Pants: $44.00

Bad Joan

Bad Joan is a recent addition to my online shopping repetoir.  They tout themselves as an “online sample sale featuring overstock from the best up and coming and indie designers” and so far, they seem to fit the bill.  I’m hoping to make a purchase or two from them soon, so I’ll keep you posted on the quality, style and inside legal scoop of the designers.

Elwood: Pheene Tank in Concord: $27.00

Kasil: Benatar Izabella in Fog: $62.00

Now that Urban Outfitters is out of the picture, where will you shop?

  1. I love that you mentioned Ruche. I love their clothes. They have an Urban Outfitter appeal, but they’re not as pretentious, I think.

I haven’t bought anything from them (yet), but I LOVE the stuff at Ruche and their prices are very reasonable too!

as far as i know mapel doesn’t ship to canada (??), so that’s a disappointment. i ADORE ruche, though. i have a dozen things in my shopping cart but have yet to narrow it down to 3 to 4.

for the last month or two i have been strictly shopping on ebay and in thrift stores.

    thanks, jen!

These sites don’t offer much in terms of menswear.

Are there any good UO alternatives for men’s fashion?

    • Though I’ve posted a few options (mostly sample sales) for organic, reputable menswear, I’m still working on finding cheaper (but still respectable) alternatives. Mapel (shopmapel.com) does have a menswear section that’s pretty badass, and Bluefly.com has great sales.

And, of coures, keep your eyes on the site. I’m working on compiling a menswear verstion of “Alternatives to UO” and should have it posted soon.

  14. Kathleen says:

Don’t forget Etsy. While there are a million shops on there selling doily dresses and ill-fitting hoodies, there are some very quality shops as well. Many designers will work with you to make exactly what you want, sized for you. UO can’t come close to that kind of care and quality. Bonus, your money is going to a small business and supports fair labor.
