Get Wet: Eco-Conscious Swimwear

It’s too hot in Seattle.  No, really: it’s been in the nineties all week, and on Wednesday we hit an all-time record: 103 degrees of sweaty humid heat.  Though I’m spending my days in clothing that’s work appropriate and weather resistant (dresses! sandals! cropped pants and sleeveless shirts!) I’m day dreaming about sitting on the shores of Lake Washington, dipping my feet off the dock just before jumping into the cold water.  The trouble is that, for this fantasy, I need a new swimsuit.

So I hunted for some of the best handmade, organic, and otherwise conscious options – ones that will keep me (and you) cool without burning a hole in our wallets.

BTC Elements Cut-Out One Piece: $148 On sale: $74

Cut-outs are the big thing for summer, and this one’s made of 90% organic cotton (10% spandex) in California.  It’s also on sale for 50% off. (This is why I love Seattle: it doesn’t get really hot until July, and most swimwear is on sale by then!)

Nimli Deux FM Mystique: $82

Made with soy, organic cotton and spandex, this cocoa-colored bikini is cut for a daring (but not slutty) look.  It also comes in tons of colors, all of which are made from remnant or organic fabrics.

Black Heart Bunny Crocodile Print Burgundy Swimsuit: $28

This suit has been on my list for over a year: it’s got a great shape, is adjustable, and though it’s not organic, it is made in San Diego by independent designer Black Heart Bunny.  Out of all the suits I’ve seen in the past few years, this one and the one below are the ones I covet most…and this option is on sale!

Miss Branche Oh La La Maillot (custom sized!): $115

This suit is not only made locally by Seattle-based Miss Branche, it’s also a two-piece - which means less bunching and sagging, and easier bathroom breaks – and custom sized to your exact measurements.  It’s completely worth the money for something that universally flattering and well-fitting.

If you’re in the market for a swimsuit, I highly recommend going for something organic or made by an independent designer.  The quality is almost always better (which is awesome for a classic suit you can wear for years to come) and you’ll know you’ve got something interesting and unique.
