What About Wednesday: Holding On To Stones
Once a week I ask the same bleary-eyed question: “What about Wednesday?”It’s my day to post whatever the hell I feel like, with no regard to fashion, eco-consciousness or, occasionally, even coherent thoughts.
Nine things I like to remember when I’m stressed out and overwhelmed:
- Sometimes, it’s just not fair. I can either stomp my feet and pout, or I can do something constructive about it.
- …and I should really do something constructive, no matter how cute I am when I pout.
- Running out of constructive options isn’t an excuse; “get over it” and “get out of it” are still viable options (a.k.a. quit bitchin’).
- Eight months ago, I quit smoking. I kicked that problem’s ass, and I can kick this one’s, too.
- The guy who screwed up my lunch order when I’m already stressed out, then copped an attitude about it, is probably stressed out, too.
- …or maybe he’s just an ass. Either way, being mean isn’t going to make him do his job better.
- Venting is only a good release if I find the right person – just one! - to vent to. (Talking smack about one friend to another is just bad form.)
- Looking up images of “stones” leaves one with tons of pictures of people…stoned. The hilarity abounds.
- Letting it get to me is like holding on to stones: it makes me feel powerful (look at all of this anger I can throw at you!) but it’s pretty damned exhausting.
We can all benefit from more ideas on how to deal with the stress of our busy lives. What are yours?

Sometimes, the best feeling for me is a good cry. A REALLY good cry.
Granted, you can’t do that in public, so I sometimes just put on some loud music and dance it out.
But really… the crying helps.

it might sound silly, but i’ve been looking more and more to the food i eat. eating lots of leafy greens, whole grains, and *nourishing* foods (as opposed to processed and junk foods) really helps to calm and relax you. if you put in good things, you get out good things, too. it’s not a cure-all, but it’s a start!
Ohh, it depends for me. It all depends on why I’m stressed.
Sometimes I work best under stress if say I’m designing.
But life’s personal stresses either see me running to find a rock to hide under and just “be” for as long as needed.
And like Jaime said, sometimes you just need a good old cry.

i try to do something constructive that relates to it, even if it doesn’t fix it. work was really frustrating me the other day, so i updated my resume. just filling in my current job and responsibilities made me feel better, like i could find work elsewhere if i wanted to.

This post can read my mind! While I was reading the first thing that cross my thoughts was the statement I try to repeat myself when I’m in a very bad “everything I do is useless” mood. that’s it “everyone has its own time to reach its objectives. you’ve got yours so there is no BEING LATE. recently I’ve found out that I can relax myself and clear my mind while I make order of my house..but it works for me probably only because I’m a little ossessive-compulsive;)
another thing in which I believe is “every now and then try to do something from your TO DO list, even if it seems very stupid” (for exemple leave a comment in one of your favourite blogs;))
great job by the way I love your blog!

Yes, a really good cry helps tons!
After that I ask, what can I do about (insert problem/stress here) right now?
If my stress is directly related to feeling overwhelmed I ask, what can be eliminated from the line up? what is most important? I also remind myself that I just have to be “good enough”. This comes in handy to remind my perfectionist self that sometimes 1000% isn’t necessary.
I agree, having a good laugh helps out too!
