Oh, Paris, That’s Just Low
In general, I have no problem with Paris Hilton. She’s running her business (based on her socialite status and personality, but it is a business) and I can’t fault her for tapping into the cult of celebrity. Sometimes, though, the way she surfs the trendy waves gets a little out of hand. This is an excerpt from a press release I received just a few weeks ago:
“Hi There! I hope you are doing well.In light of the recent “green” craze that is currently sweeping the fashion world, Paris Hilton Footwear is the latest to jump on the bandwagon. Now, eco-conscious fashionistas can have their cake and eat it too, simply by purchasing Paris Hilton Footwear. Since every box is made of recycled materials with built in handles, there is no need for a shopping bag.Essentially, through Paris Hilton Footwear’s new shoe-box-handle technology, more than 2 million bags per year will be saved, as exemplified through the company’s production of 2 million pairs of shoes per year.”
Really, Paris? Packaging a pair of shoes – made with god knows what – in a box with handles does not make that pair of shoes “green.” Period.
And “new shoe-box-handle technology“? I’m pretty sure I was awed by this sort of thing when I was five, so unless I was living in an alternate universe, this “technology” ain’t new. Who are you trying to kid?
What’s the worst faux-eco promotion or advertisement you’ve seen recently? Call them out!

Personally, I like to view it like this:
It’s a good first step in the right direction, but has room for growth. Recycled materials ARE a good first step, and eliminating more waste is as well. I don’t think it makes her products green, but is a small step towards “being greener.”
I think that’s poor writing/editing on the PR company’s end, personally.

Agreed! I think claiming the shoe box handle idea makes Paris’ shoes eco-conscious is ridiculous, but I don’t think she should stop doing it. It just needs to be handled more honestly – the boxes are recycled materials and allow consumers to forgo an extra bag – and the company needs to look into other sustainable practices. A box isn’t enough.
I actually kinda like the concept. Obviously the PR person needs to get a grip and stop being so condescending – green should not be in quotes (as if it’s not a real thing) and the word craze is stupid, this isn’t a fad. And bag handles are not technology. I also don’t think girls need to buy Paris Hilton shoes in order to be green.
*But* having a shoe box with handles is a neat idea. I mean, clothes need to be covered up because otherwise they’ll be exposed, and possibly ruined. But shoes are already covered when you buy them. The only reason you put them in a bag is because they don’t have handles. If you had handles, you could save thousands of plastic and paper bags. Wasteful bags is one reason why reusable shopping bags were created. I hope more companies will jump on *that* bandwagon.

Oh Paris, you’re reaching with that one. I haven’t seen anything as awesomely audacious as that in a while!

Paris Hilton is going…green? http://bit.ly/77ZqN (Yeah, right.)
I really agree with Ashe Mischief, though it isn’t completely green, small steps make a difference!
