Vicarious by Nature (Warning: You May Have to Leave the House)
Vicarious by Nature, or VbN, is based in LA, but when I saw their Fall/Winter 2009 lookbook, it felt like home to me – it felt like Seattle.
I love how warm and luxurious this line feels, and it turns out that’s not false advertising: as I’ve researched VbN, I keep finding the same customer comments: “Mmm, soft!”
It should be: VbN‘s designs are all produced using organic, raw materials and a natural, sustainable processes.
The truth is, I can’t say it nearly as well as their “About” page does:
We pride ourselves on being more than a clothing company; but instead a brand that represents a lifestyle. VbN recognizes that “eco-friendly” is a journey, not a destination. Thus, we have embraced an educational approach, sharing our knowledge with local and global communities. Additionally, VbN gives back to its community through partnerships with non-profit organizations that share our vision.
VICARIOUS BY NATURE was inspired by the notion that we can substitute old ideas for new ideas by promoting a proactive approach to environmental friendliness. Keeping true to our sustainable values, VbN always strives to use an organic production methodology. Our intention is to create quality products while maintaining a lifestyle that facilitates a movement of sustainability.
One last thing, and it’s a bit of a snag for us internet shoppers: though there are a couple of items available in online stores, your best bet at picking this stuff up is actually leaving the house. VbN has a comprehensive listing of all of the stores that carry their designs, and leads you to the closest one based on your state and city. Most of them are small boutiques, too, so your trip is not only ecologically sustainable, but also socially responsible.
In short: I just might start leaving the house to shop.

[...] Around the time I first told you about VbN, I made the claim that I could wear their styles all winter – nothing else – and be completely content. Their casual, layered aesthetic and muted colors are so very, very Seattle, and so very, very me! Additionally, in contrast to my first post about them, I could buy their stuff without having to leave the house…which means that I should be ecstatic about this sale, right? [...]
