Eco-Friendly Stocking Stuffers (Part I)

Written on November 9, 2009. Written by Jennifer Nicole.

I’m the kind of girl that absolutely has to start my holiday shopping early. Post-Thanksgiving deals aside, I’d rather pay a little more and have the extra time, than deal with the stress from trying to keep the extra cash.

Stocking stuffers are always the hardest part for me.  What the hell is small enough to put in a stocking, cheap enough to allow for other (bigger) presents, and not really stupid or pointless?

Candy’s good, of course, and so are tightly-wrapped lingerie or silk boxers…but there’s only so much sugar and sex one can add to a giant sock before it becomes overkill, you know?

Bath & Body

This one’s kind of a no-brainer – soaps, bubbles, beauty products – but instead of just raiding Lush for a gift basket, I’d rather get something more simple, more elegant…and handmade is always better than “marketed as handmade.”

Jewelry

I’m used to my jewelry being boxed under a tree; it’s all “occasion piece” this and “big lead up to a little box” that.  Wouldn’t it be such a sweet surprise to dig into your stocking and, instead of plastic bobbles, feel a bracelet between your fingers?

Clothing & Accessories

Wrap it up tight or “line” your stocking for a fuller look.  (Less lumps!)  This year, I have devious plans involving a pair of silk boxers and lots of hidden stuff wrapped inside.  Instead of the usual grab-and-go, my boyfriend will actually have to take time with his stocking.  (It’ll be worth it, honey, I promise.)

EDIT: I promised a second helping, and here it is!  Part II has even more eco-friendly clothing, bath and beauty products, jewelry, and even some housewares (an alarm clock?!), all of which will fit into a typical Christmas stocking.  Enjoy!

(You know there will be a Part III soon, right?)

Enjoyed this article! I’ve been encouraged by the number of eco-friendly small toys I’ve been able to find online this year — sustainable wooden puzzles, recycled materials, etc. Etsy.com is good for that king of thing — both recycled and “upcycled” offerings.
