Monday’s Sustainable Sales

Written on December 21, 2009. Written by Jennifer Nicole.

Unless you’re willing to pay for overnight shipping, your holiday shopping is now limited to local haunts (which ain’t so bad, ecologically).  So, I’m back to showcasing more selfish sustainable sales – stuff I want for me instead of stuff I want for loved ones.  Even if you’re waiting until after Christmas to shop for yourself, I’m going to assume you all don’t mind the eye candy!

HauteLook is having sales on three great brands today: Kasil, Lotus and Skin.

Kasil

This one falls into the “US-made” categorty of sustainability, so if you’re not living in the fifty states, this isn’t your best choice for green jeans.  However, it’s still a really reputable brand, so I won’t dissuade my out-of-country friends too much.

Kasil‘s designer, David Lim, had been working in film for years before joining the family business, a custom boutique that the family has owned and operated since 1968. While designing for Hollywood celebs, he was inspired to create a pair of pants - which his clients were really impressed with.

In 2002 Lim founded the Kasil brand as designer and CEO, which now employs eighteen men and women in their Los Angeles headquarters.  The green part: Kasil supports the local community by manufacturing and producting all of their jeans in southern California.

Lotus

The name “Lotus Pure Organics” makes this one self-explanatory, but I’ll give you the skinny anyway:

The brand was founded by Dr. Joan Husain, a practicing internist who appreciated the benefits of a natural lifestyle.  Our overall health – and the planet’s – is dependent on the foods we eat and the products we use every day.

You all know that a lot of the products we see are only sold as “green,” when they’re really nothing close to it.  Joan wanted to change that, so she focused on creating a line of 100%-USDA-certified organic products that don’t use any of the synthetic preservatives, petrochemicals, parabens, fragrances or FD&C dyes that other products hide under a “green” label.

As a last bonus, Lotus also never, ever tests on animals.

Skin

I really, really love organic lingerie.

Skin is a brand I hadn’t heard of until today, but after a little research, I’m seeing not only the luxurious softness that comes with all well-made organic cotton products, but also some really cute designs – designs I have never seen before.

Skin says that their products “redefine sexiness” and I completely agree.  They’re soft and sexy, not raunchy, but still really playful.  I especially love their knit panties and stockings - which come in more obvious colors like black, grey and white, but also in light pinks and blues, as well as a bright-as-hell hot pink that I, personally, think would be really, really fun to wear.

Not to be overly focused, Skin also makes stuff you can show off in public, from leggings to blouses to dresses to jackets, and they’re all included in this sale.  They all infuse a certain natural sexuality, without being obvious.  And again, organic cotton.  Yessssss.
