Earth Day is Great; Earth Life is Better
Last year, I completely avoided making a slew of Earth Day posts. “For me, every day is Earth Day,” I thought, “So why get up-in-arms about one annual happening which, by and large, just makes people feel better about not recycling ever other day of the year?”
I’ll admit, I was being cynical.
More and more, Earth Day is becoming Earth Week, Earth Month…and creating a movement wherein people begin to see that they can be greener every day, without it making a dent in their time or their paychecks. So, this year, I’m asking that each of my readers try to find one thing they can do to be just a little greener.
- Can you unplug the computer when you go to bed at night? (It saves energy.)
- How about checking out your local farmer’s market for produce? (Washingtonians: you have 44 to choose from.)
- Will you support local designers or boutiques by going there first, instead of the easy-to-shop big box stores?
- How about just trying – for a week – a natural makeup product, or shower gel, or non-toxic nail polish?
There are so many ways to “go green” and, in most cases, you can treat yourself while doing it. Think about it: unplugging your computer at night not only saves energy, but lowers your utility costs; buying local produce is actually cheaper than the grocery store; and the money you save doing those first two things can easily be spent on a one-of-a-kind local frock or beauty product that doesn’t harm the earth.
It’s like taking care of the planet helps you take care of yourself. Win-win.

Earth day is about more than just organic produce.
What will you do to celebrate Earth Day?
