Awakened Aesthetic began in 2009 by Jennifer Nicole. As one of the first (and only) ethical fashion blogs on the market, Awakened Aesthetic gained momentum by featuring independent designers, organic brands, and introducing an educational series of “Exposés” that informed the fashion community about the harm done by some of the most popular retailers in fashion today. Shortly after Awakened Aesthetic began, Jennifer partnered with Lindsay Ginn to create of The Demoiselles – an organization devoted to discussing with the fashion loving public the influence of media on women. In 2010, Lindsay and Jennifer decided to streamline Awakened Aesthetic, and The Demoiselles, as well as Lindsay’s site, Broke & Beautiful, into one entity.  This brought the introduction of Lindsay as a new author at Awakened Aesthetic.

Awakened Aesthetic:

The fashion conscience for the fashion conscious.

It’s only recently that people are starting to figure out, after years of apathy, that when we make choices, we cause change.

Even the simplest of decisions – where to buy a new pair of shoes, or which brand of lip gloss to try – affects the rest of our world in some small way.  Buying from one store might support a political candidate with different beliefs than yours; buying from another funds child labor…and buying from a third supports immigration reform, or an organic farmer near your home town, or a US worker making a fair wage in a clean environment.

It’s time we take the inspiration that beautiful things can give us and use them to do good. By buying locally, researching major brands and choosing products made sustainably, we can make a difference, not only ecologically, but politically and sociologically.

Awakened Aesthetic’s goal is to make it simple, by finding the information and products that will make it easier…and more fun…and more beautiful…to shop sustainably.

Because there is no reason to sacrifice quality, and sustainability, for beauty.

If you have a specific conscious shopping need, a question about a designer, or a recommendation for an indie, local or organic product we should feature, email jen@awakenedaesthetic.com.
